What Is It?

The Toshiba Satellite A135-S4527 is a bestselling (which doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s good) laptop with a 15.4-inch widescreen LCD screen (with TruBrite technology for sharper pictures, ). Its XGA-resolution screen (1280 x 800) permits side-by-side viewing of documents for increased productivity.

Speed-wise, it is powered by Intel's 1.73 GHz Core Duo T2080 processor (not bad) and a 120 GB hard drive (adequate but consider buying a 500 Gb external hard-drive for backing up files), 1 GB of installed RAM (go for 2 GB if you can afford it or consider running it on Windows XP) and a dual-layer/multi-format DVD drive that also burns CDs (standard for a machine of this specification).

Naturally, like its competitors, it has integrated 54g wireless (WiFi) connectivity, and Intel GMA 950 video card with up to 256 MB of shared video RAM.

Operating System?

It comes preinstalled with Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium.

Tech Spex?
  • 4 USB 2.0 ports for connecting a wide range of peripherals--from digital cameras to MP3 players
  • 1 FireWire (also known as IEEE 1394 or i.Link) port for connecting digital video camcorders and other peripherals
  • 1 VGA monitor port
  • 1 S-Video out
  • 1 PCMCIA (or PC Card) slot (Type II, PCMCIA R2.01, PC Card16, CardBus)
  • 1 headphone jack, 1 microphone jack
  • 5-in-1 memory card reader that's compatible with Secure Digital (including SDIO), MMC, Memory Stick, Memory Stick PRO, xD Picture Card memory cards
  • It also has an integrated 56K modem (V.92) and an RJ-45 LAN network port (for a 10/100 Fast Ethernet connection to networks and DSL/cable modems).
REVIEW SURVEY

NOTEBOOKREVIEW.COM

“For the typical user who only plans to surf the Internet and use a laptop for light use, this machine seems perfect.  It is no high-end monster, but it's adequate for the common non-gamer.  My grandmother is very pleased with it and its capabilities, though she's still getting used to the changes that Windows Vista brings.

“Pros: Inexpensive, Feature-packed, High build quality, Stays quite cool, Amount of junk software is relatively small.

“Cons: Battery life is short (go for a higher spec battery if you can), Tru-Brite screen shows a lot of glare and fingerprints.”

CNET.COM

“Pros: Comes with Microsoft Windows Vista Home premium and Microsoft Windows Vista OS, which is somewhat more favorable than some similarly priced notebooks.By way of comparison, the typical cost of a product with a comparable set of OS is $1,420.

“Cons: Only has a Pentium dual Core processor. This is not out of line with the product's price, but is less efficient than the average notebook on the market today. Also, this notebook has only 1 GB RAM, which is less than some similarly priced notebooks. For example, the Dell Inspiron 1525, a 6-pound notebook at around $800, has 4 GB RAM.Shared video memory has a negative impact on system performance which may be okay for users with more modest graphics needs.Users with more demanding needs should look to a graphics solution that brings its own muscle.”
